FAQs

Does this work involve riding or require any previous knowledge of horses?
No mounted riding activities are a part of Equine Assisted Psychotherapy or Interactive Learning. All of the work we do with horses is done on the ground in relation to the horse. No prior knowledge or horsemanship training is necessary, in fact most of the time it is better to have none at all!
How do I know if this model is right for me?
Equine Assisted Psychotherapy is an effective brief therapy model on it’s own or can be used in partnership with conventional talk therapy. It is especially beneficial for those who sense a need to move beyond the cognitive approach of talk therapy and explore the a more holistic approach to healing that engages the mind, body and soul in the process of healing. While Equine Therapy is beneficial with adults it is an especially helpful model with children and teens who often don’t have words to describe the things they are thinking and feeling.

What is the difference between EAP and EIL?
At Healing Reins we offer two types of programs: Equine Assisted Psychotherapy (EAP) and Equine Interactive Learning (EIL), both utilizing the EAGALA model.
EAP is effective for clients who are challenged with emotional and behavioral issues as well as conflicting relationship dynamics. We see individuals, couples, and families who are seeking growth personal and interpersonal growth and healing in their lives.
EIL is focused on the development of life skills, team building and group dynamics. It is especially effective when partnering with schools and corporate group needs.
What can I expect from a session?
Expect to meet yourself in new ways. Our sessions are facilitated by a team consisting of a licensed mental health professional, an equine specialist and the presence of the horse/s. This team works together to create learning experiences geared toward your personal area of need. Equine Therapy is an experiential model of healing meaning it brings with it, in the moment – visual and feeling outcomes. It is engaging work, full of “ah-ha” moments that can help promote personal growth and insight.
